Why use a Lamborghini When a Hyundai Will Do Quite Well?  by Robert Fitzpatrick

Reading this article will save you time, travel, and expense.  It is no longer necessary to travel long distances for a deposition.  All you need is to download and set up the Zoom app, a strong internet access, and a good quality webcam and microphone.

REMOTE ZOOM DEPOSITIONS

Much like telephonic depositions, patience is the key.  It is important to speak slowly, clearly, and allow time between questions/answers/objections.  At times the audio/visual signal needs to catch up, but the benefits greatly outweigh travel time and expense.  I have found a high-speed internet connection to be the key to a good deposition.

Benefits of Remote
Zoom Depositions
1.  The Zoom app is a free download (both sides must install, set up, and test prior to depo date)
2.  Eliminates exposure and travel costs for attorneys and clients
3.  Provides attorneys face-to-face contact
4.  Ability to gauge reactions and facial expressions

Useful Hints for Internet Depositions
Here are a few more things to consider in making remote depositions a more reliable tool.
Make sure your computer is powerful enough to maintain the connection and display the video well.  A good quality webcam and microphone are also important.  When your system is set up, be sure to do extensive testing in advance.  I have found friends and family very willing subjects.  They make great test subjects, hardly ever say no, and always have plenty to say.  Depositions can last a long time, so make a few test calls that last at least 15 to 30 minutes to make sure you have your audio and video set up properly and know how to navigate the website.

Zoom uses email addresses and scheduled links e-mailed to you in advance by the host of the meeting, requiring a window of time to be scheduled in advance.  The e-mail you receive will have a link for you to click to join the meeting.   Add to your calendar and set up reminders so you don't miss a scheduled event.
